Violating Driver Expectancy

  Human Factors

Perception / reaction, recognition and obedience can be affected when you violate driver expectation. Every traffic engineer should have a good fundamental grasp of how various traffic control and design features will affect the motoring user. And perhaps even more importantly, how will the lack of these features affect the user. Unfortunately, very few have actually studied and researched these affects. As composers and researchers for national standards for traffic control and other features of the roadway, we have that expertise, and are frequently called on to use it in deposition and trial testimony. Our expertise in perception / reaction times and roadway coefficient of friction are often called on to more clearly define the analysis of other accident reconstructionists.

  Night-Time / Low-Light Photography

Because of the "imbalance" between the human eye and the camera lens, night-time or low-light photographic reconstruction requires a special technique to accurately portray the scene at a particular time. We have provided this service to several agencies and law firms around the country.

These three photographs show how increasing the luminance levels of overhead lights and the amount of vertical illumination can reveal a pedestrian who was nearly invisible under lower-lighting conditions. (FHWA - Public Roads Magazine)

The photo below, the one on our Past Cases page and the first two on our Traffic & Transportation Engineering page are from two of those reconstructions. With the advent of the digital camera, both photos and videos can be used to closely replicate a low light scene accurately.

The photo above was one of a series of photos that were used to replicate the lighting at a particular time
during the evening setting of the sun. This is the most difficult time to produce a series of photos for
reenactment purposes since the sun won't hold still!
